To forward unanswered dental calls safely, test the exact carrier, phone system, ring group, and destination the practice will use. Generic star codes are not a deployment plan. They may differ by provider, number type, device, and account configuration.

Document the current call path
Before changing anything, record:
- every public number and its provider;
- whether the number is local, toll-free, mobile, VoIP, or part of a hosted system;
- ring groups, simultaneous ringing, auto attendants, and extensions;
- no-answer and busy timers;
- voicemail destination and greeting;
- caller-ID behavior;
- after-hours and holiday rules;

Run the pre-opening test matrix
Call from at least two outside networks and test:
- local staff answer before the threshold;
- no one answers and the backup receives the call;
- the backup rejects or misses the call;
- two calls arrive at once;
- caller ID is visible where expected;
- a transfer back to the practice succeeds or fails safely;
- voicemail appears in the intended order;
- after-hours routing starts and stops at the correct local time;
- the destination number is unavailable;
- forwarding is disabled and the original route returns.
For each case, record expected route, observed route, answer time, caller ID, audio quality, voicemail outcome, handoff record, and pass/fail.
Protect against loops and dead ends
Never forward two numbers to each other. Verify that the backup does not route unanswered calls back to the original number. Decide where a call ends if every answering path fails and who monitors that final queue.

Launch with monitoring and rollback
Keep the old configuration available during the launch window. Name a person who watches sample calls and handoffs. Define rollback triggers, such as repeated routing failure, caller-ID loss that blocks work, missing records, or calls terminating without a usable fallback.
After rollback, verify normal service with outside test calls. Disabling a setting is not proof that the original path recovered.
